Hi Phil.
The Standards keep rising out of
ashes like the Phoenix. This time, a Vanguard Estate in Trivandrum
in South India was spotted by a friend. No details yet though.
Cheers
Karl
The following comes from our
resident Vanguard Estate expert, who identifies it as only the
fourth known surviving Phase 2 Estate
Phil,
It's
clearly a phase 2 Estate as it still has the chrome trim
parts between the side lights and grille which the Phase
1A like mine didn't have. It would have been built between
1953 and 1955 if built in Coventry, as the phase 3 Estate
succeeded it in 1955 and only Phase 2 commercials were
built after that. I wonder if it was built in Madras from
a CKD kit.
Unfortunately
I can't tell you if it's petrol or diesel .

I
know of only 3 other phase 2 estates at present,
in England (at John Mould's premises near Reading where
Brian Simmonds is restoring a very sound diesel one),
Sweden
and Switzerland.
This
makes it a very rare vehicle.
The
Phase 1A estate also differs in having a mechanical clutch
as opposed to a hydraulic on the phase 2, a different
bonnet mascot (a rocket on the phase 2), a 3 bar grille on
the 1 A as opposed to a 2 bar on the 2 and grey as
opposed to body coloured dash and internal window
surrounds on the 2. I believe phase 1As also had
slightly narrower wheels and an unpressurised
radiator whereas the phase 2 had a pressurised
radiator and certain other minor mechanical
upgrades.

| On
looking at the pictures again I can confirm that the car
also has a phase 2 steering wheel with a blue centre boss
with a lion in the middle in a grey surround whereas the 1A
had a gold coloured centre boss with the 1950s open book
type logo in red and black. The 1A indicator switch was in
plastic in the centre of the steering wheel whereas the
phase 2 was a sliding metal one on the top of the
wheel.
With
the sidelight trim and steering wheel being definitely phase
2 I'd say that's what it is.

So there you have it, the fourth
Phase 2 Vanguard Estate. At
this point I expect a deluge of emails telling me about other
survivors. Lets hope so.
