on the Common, Harpenden. 9th July 2003
Classics on the Common was a roaring
success. The organisers were forced to stop new entrants arriving
since the common was full by 6.30pm! By that time there were
over 1800 Classic Cars and Motorcycles from all over the County parked
on the green, with many countless hundreds reluctantly turned
away.
It seemed like most of Harpenden was
filled with the overflow cars. Much interest too from the general
public, many thousands turned out to view the vehicles and talk
to the owners. Many of the vehicles have been lovingly restored over
many years by their owners. Participants
came not only from the local area but from much further afield. Werner
Maurer arrived at the event after a two day journey from Zurich,
Switzerland and was probably the furthest travelled.
The photos show Werner Maurer's 1945
Standard 8 Drophead Coupe which was originally a
Hertfordshire Car before being restored in Switzerland. This was its
first journey back to its homeland! Te other car is the Webmasters
1919 SLS. The other Standard present, not pictured was Roger Barnes's
1954 Standard 8, a local car from Harpenden
