The Manchester & North West Group won the award for the Best Club
Stand on Saturday, 16th August, 2003, at the prestigious Tatton
Park Classic Car Show and Giant Autojumble. Ninety-two club stands were
exhibiting on the Saturday and the show attracted an enormous amount of
public interest.
To add to the success on the day, Mr and Mrs Thomas Haslam, who were
exhibiting on the Stand won Best Car in Show with their 1957 Vanguard
Sportsman, a magnificent vehicle in absolute showroom condition.

Over the two days the Group won two further awards, a third placing on
the Saturday with a Triumph Renown and a third placing on the Sunday with
another Renown, two fabulous cars in first class condition.
It is thought that this is the first time the Standard Motor Club has
had a Stand at the Tatton Show and Mr Stuart Holmes, the Show’s
Organizer, in presenting the Cup to Dr
Bryan Jones, said he was delighted with the Group’s presentation and
hoped it would be exhibiting again at Tatton in the future. He added that
he was amazed to see such a variety of Standard cars and congratulated the
owners on their condition.

Bryan
Jones, organiser of the Manchester and NW group of the club, decided
that the club should be represented at the large Tatton Park show, near
Manchester. He and his helpers put on a very interesting display that
was rewarded by being judged Best Club Stand on the Saturday. In the

The Group had nineteen vehicles on exhibition each day with a good
selection of Standards dating from the early-thirties to the mid-sixties.
Several nice Triumphs were also on display and a war-time Standard Utility
vehicle attracted a lot of attention. The Stand "theme" was the
Golden Anniversary of the Basic Eight and one of these delightful
vehicles, belonging to Ian Law, was adorned with gold ribbons, birthday
cards and gold wrapped presents. It attracted much attention from the
visitors and was housed in the Group’s newly acquired 28 by 10 feet
gazebo. Publicity was also given to the Centenary of the Standard Motor
Company. Refreshments were provided for members and visiting enthusiasts
and the Group was privileged by the support of the Club’s Chairman,
Peter Lockley, and the Publicity Manager, Steve O’Hara, who also
exhibited their vehicles on the second day of the show. Frank Williams,
Wirral Group’s Organizer also attended and exhibited his lovely 1931 Big
Nine.
All in all, the Group had a most successful weekend and is now already
planning its show programme for 2004. If you would like to join in its
activities please contact Bryan or Morwena on 0161
483 7121. You will be made very
welcome.
