Lots of
awards at the IMechE celebrations

May 11th was a celebration of 100
years of the Institute of Mechanical Engineers, and BMIHT Gaydon was
chosen as the venue. All Coventry engineered or built products
were invited so it was predominately motor cycles and cars.
Each manufacturer was limited in numbers
so it made for a good variety without too much duplication. Being a
glorious day much of it was spent in the sunshine, for after taking
a look at the items on show, and without the usual trade stalls, it
gave a chance to relax and chat.
There was an opportunity to look at
some new exhibits and the Issigonis section proved very interesting,
as was the continual running of historic films in the cinema. Back
ouside the cars ranged from Alvis, Armstrong Siddeley, Jaguar, early
Singer, Hillman, Humber, Daimler, Triumph and of course Standard.
Standard were represented by
- John Maxwell (Flying 12)
- Ian Leggett (Vanguard 2)
- Brian Yates (Standard Ten)
- Alan Withey (Standard
Eight)
- Peter Lockley (Vanguard 1a
Estate)
- Steve O'Hara (Teignmouth)
- Ivan Hancox (Vanguard Six
Estate) and
- Robert Browett ( V3 Kenilworth)
The judges were clearly impressed with
our vehicles proudly displaying the Standard Motor Club banner, as 5
of us were awarded Highly Commended Awards (Alan, Ivor, John, Ian,
and Brian)
