Trainspotting
on the Severn Valley Railway
Hi Phil,
Newly refurbished by Mike Wilks, after
the front end was torn apart by Mike and Brian Birch at last
October's Restoration Show at
Stoneleigh my brother Pete's 8 made an
appearance at Bewdley Station, Severn Valley Railway, on Saturday
21st February, at their 1960s
day. Pictures attached, with 1961 Mk 2 Zodiac and Mechanical Horse
also visible respectively. It
is parked by a very interesting Telephone Box with combined
postage stamp dispenser . The
car was almost going home in that its first owner was a nurse at the
Tenbury Wells Cottage Hospital. Bewdley was the railway junction for
the line to Tenbury Wells which closed in the early 1960s and
it would be nice to think that after the line closed the owner
would have to have driven the 8 to Bewdley to catch a train and
would probably have parked just where the photos were taken.
This was the only proper Standard
present, so Pete is taking this opportunity to plug future Classic
events there. On Sunday 11th
October 2009 is
the Severn Valley Railway Classic Car and Bike Day. The
railway doesn't have provision for Club stands at either the 1960s
Day or the Classic Car and Bike Day but it would be nice to see some
more Standards on display. The only other Standard I have seen
at either event has been the 10 of Nigel Tinkler at Bridgnorth
station. Our esteemed magazine editor has however attended their
1940s weekends which this year are on 27th and 28th June, where
no Standards will be present as the event clashes with our
International and 4th and 5th July.
Sadly Peter's
cars are all too modern for that.
The
SVR is a good day out
when special events take place , with plenty of classic
cars and a few commercials at each station, plus the steam hauled
trains plus fascinating museums at Kidderminster and Highley, not to
mention good real ale choices at Bridgnorth and Kidderminster
stations. Heavily discounted
fares are available for exhibitors. Tel 01259 403816 or
find Severn Valley Railway on
www.svr.co.uk for
any of the events mentioned above.
Regards,
Graham Lockley
