Standard Motor Club Anglia Road Run 2015

Hello to you all and I hope you all had a pleasant Christmas.

There is one thing certain about 2015 and that is the Anglia Road Run.

I thought I would take this opportunity to remind you of the activities over that weekend while we are in the dank and dark period of early winter in the hope that it will bring back some cheer (just in case Christmas does not do that for you)

So, Friday May 1st I intend to meet as many of you as possible just before you enter Bury St Edmunds for a light lunch and then to convoy to Ipswich. Our first stop will be at Jimmy’s Farm where you can see where the television series was made and for those who made a short visit some years ago on a previous Anglia Road Run, how it has developed. We will then go to our hotel for the weekend, the Belstead Brook Hotel in Ipswich.

If you are unable to join us in Bury and make your own way to Ipswich you will find brown signs directing you to the hotel. In the evening it will be a meal in the hotel and a chance to catch up on old times and later in the evening have a joke telling session.

Saturday May 2nd and we will take a short drive to the Ipswich Transport Museum. This displays many hundreds of vehicles and implements but all having an Ipswich connection. We should be taking a trip in a period bus or coach as part of this experience. The Trolley Bus Cafe will be open for light snacks before we leave.

We will then drive to Felixtowe for an afternoon at the seaside. There will be an opportunity to get fairly close to the gigantic container ships in the harbour also. We then return to our hotel for a meal and some entertainment from an after dinner raconteur who I believe will give you an insight into the traditional Suffolk.

Sunday May 3rd and we will hit the country lanes with a drive to Stonham Barns for a Birds of Prey display especially for us. You can get close up to the birds also. Time permitting we could have a go at Football Golf. Yes you play golf with a football. I think the holes are larger than the usual ones also. A light lunch here.

We then head for the Dads Army Museum in Thetford who again are opening especially for us. There should be some uniformed volunteers to give the right atmosphere. A visit to see Jones’s van is also on the agenda. Light snacks available before we return to our hotel and a meal followed by some entertainment courtesy of Stuart and Zena

Monday May 4th we will leave soon after breakfast and drive towards Bury St Edmunds and to a former wartime airfield used by the USAAF. There are period films playing, displays of airfield memorabilia, the original control tower to climb with a very atmospheric feel and of course the essential light snacks.

We will end our weekend here, ideally placed for the A14, A11, A428 and all points North, West, East and South.. I hope this has helped cheer you up. If there is anything you would like to know please ask. If you would like an extra night at the hotel this can be arranged at the same rate.

Roll on May, that’s what I say.

Best Wishes Ian and Vera Leggett.
