Brian Shakespeare

Dear Richard ,

Further to my emailing you the picture of Honorary Member Brian Shakespeare I felt I should explain the occasion.

We all thought we had lost Brian when he had a serious heart attack last August.

However Brian is made of sterner stuff and was determined to stay with us to give out his wise advice to enable Vanguards to stay on the road.

The rally he attended on Sunday 23rd June was significant in being his first with Nellie, his Phase 1A Vanguard, since his heart attack. It took place at The Rock and Roll weekend at Crich Tramway Museum in Derbyshire, quite close to Brian's home in Matlock. I had to go in my TR2 and Vanguard based Swallow Doretti which Brian calls my Vanguard kit car. He was a great help when I was restoring the car notwithstanding it's not entirely a Vanguard.

The reason I was in the Doretti was that my own Vanguard 1A estate car is currently languishing at the back of my garage with a failed clutch.

As Maureen (Brian’s wife) remarked,in spite of his heart problems there is nothing wrong with Brian's voice as he regaled me with advice on fixing my clutch.

Nellie was a bit too much for Brian to drive to Crich so his daughter Sally kindly did so.

I hope everyone in the club will be gladdened to see that such a stalwart Club member is back on the rally scene.

I fear that the International at Breamore House may be a little too far for Brian but don't rule him out. As Maureen said, if he makes up his mind to do something she can't stop him !
