Avon Memories at the 1961 Standard Rally

Avon Standard Memories

Andrew Warwick with the 1930 six cylinder Avon Special

These are more archive pictures that have been sent to me by Andrew Warwick and date from 1961. This was the second running of the Standard National Rally, organised in those days by the Standard Register and it took place around the Southampton area, starting from the dealers, Munn and Underwood in Southampton and ending at Beaulieu. Andrew captured these three additional Avons that attended, as well as his own:

Avon Special 6

The first is this extremely rare if not unique Avon Special 6 from 1930. Not only is this 16Hp engine rare in the Avon, this car has the spare mounted almost flat on the rear panel as you can see in the photograph. All these photographs can be clicked on to see an enlarged version:

Unusual position for the spare, captured as the car takes part in Driving Tests

Avon Standard Special No 3

The second car, shown above and below  is this 1930 Avon Sports on the 9 Hp chassis. It looks very original, with artillery wheels. This second shot shows the same WH 2401 parked outside the "Sir Walter Tyrell" in the New Forest where the roadrun stopped to slake the owners thirsts and top up a radiator or two.

Avon 9 Coupe

The third and final featured car in this article is this Avon 9 Coupe.  Andrew believes that this little black two door was once the property of Gracie Fields and he describes it as having a very snug little interior.

This appears to be the identical model to Peter Lee's which I have pictured on the right - but he will no doubt tell me if I am wrong. Peters Avon was subject of a website feature here

All the bigger pictures on this page have been enlarged from the originals with a consequential slight loss of quality. They are all copyrighted so if you want to use them please seek permission.

This has been a particularly rewarding page for me to produce and I thank Andrew for the superb material. I hope that you have found it interesting too. It would be good to compile a record, for everyone's enjoyment and for posterity, of more of the earlier Standard National Rallies, first run in 1960 - if I get enough material I will open up a complete new area of the site. Please send me any photographs that you have and a story to go with them if at all possible. Don't worry if you can't recall the date - someone else will probably be able to assist. All material will be returned.

You can read the invite to this, the 47th running of the Standard Annual  Rally here
