The Challenge!- Avon 12 Restoration in India

These are the same model of car!

It would be interesting to say that these are the before and after restoration shots but the reality is quite different:

Both cars are Avon bodied 1934 Standard 10/12 Special Tourers and, so far as I know, they are the only two surviving examples (awaiting email deluge!) The first has been sent to me by George Soans in India and the second by Nicholas and Joy Thorne, new members from Oxfordshire    (George is also in the process of joining the club)

Nick and Joy's car was previously featured on this website last year :restored car

I am pleased it has been taken in by enthusiastic owners who, as you can see are already out enjoying the car.

George, however,  has a big task on his hands. He writes:

"Hello Phil,
I am sending you snapshots of Standard Avon Special as attachment which I am restoring I would like you to have a look at the snaps and if you could send me snaps of the completely restored car, front windscreen frame and the meter panels and meter dials as they are missing in my car so that I could fabricate the same. I have already worked on the engine and other mechanical aspects of the vehicle. I am also in need of tyres and a set of head lights as they are not avaliable in India. It would be great if you could direct me to somebody who could help me with it. The car has got 5-5.25x17 on four wheels and the spare wheel has 5-5.25x16. The car is a 1934 model 10 hp Standard Avon Special and the chassis no is 170430AS"

I am sure that Nick and Joy will be able to help with the photos that George needs and I have already advised him where tyres are available.

Here is another photo of the Restoration project and a photo of the already restored engine.

Hopefully to provide further encouragement, here is another shot of what the Indian car will look like when it is restored.

I have put a print quality copy of this superb shot in the Picture Gallery

I am aware that there are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know.  Please send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Webmaster
