Feature
on a 1935 Standard Avon Waymaker 16 Saloon, in the USA
The following comes
from Shawn Miller in Indianapolis:

Hi
Phil,
I
bought the car in the '73 or so from a local gentleman who
had a broker running around England buying up cars and shipping
them here. He would then fix their little problems and
sell them. I was 14 yrs old at the time and used paper
route money to buy it. It came over with an earlier 9 hp
boattailed speedster with cycle fenders, and both them had been purchased
from a farmer in the Midlands, according to the broker who I met
some time later. I have often regretted not being in a
position to buy both of them, and the 9 hp hasn't surfaced
recently, I don't know where it is now, but will find it
someday.
The
running boards were missing so Ed just made up a little triangle
thing although, I do think he had some sort of photo to go by. Any
info you would have on the proper style for running board would
be helpful.
It
appears to be intact, the only thing that may not be original is
a Delage badged Jaeger 8 day clock, which does fit nicely in its
hole. I have a spare 20 hp engine and tranny as well (well
the main parts of them anyway). The hood ornament say
"Avon Special" as do most of the gauges.
I
will take more shots. I repainted the car in the mid 70's
and the painter didn't follow my instructions on the sweep
panel. I will probably eliminate that when I paint it
again, and I plan on restoring the top properly, it should have
a fabric insert.
Thanks
for your speedy reply! Having never been able to come over
there, I lack any good documentation on the car, and it is good
to finally meet some people who know about this marque.
The internet is truly a wonderful thing!
Are
there any remaining factory or Coachbuilder records on these
cars?
Its
license plate number is WD8897 is that is at all traceable.
Thanks, Shawn,
It's a pillarless Saloon known
as the Waymaker II and this is the first 16Hp version that I
have encountered. The Registrar will be busy trying to find if
we know of others and we will get back to you with the
information that we have. Thanks for sharing these pictures of
this very rare car with us.
