Archive Feature on a 1932/3 Avon Standard 9 Sports Tourer

Dear Webmaster

I confess to not knowing anything about Standard Cars other than recognising the name from my youth. I am a local historian who intends to include the attached photo in a book of old photographs of Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire and 'Honest John' has told me that he thinks that this car is a Standard 1 1/2 litre. Could you possibly tell me what it is and whether there is anything particularly unusual/interesting about this model which could be included in the caption accompany the picture. The registration plate is BV 1936 and I wondered whether this might be a clue as to the date of the car.

I would appreciate your expert advice

Hello Neil

Honest John is half right

Its a Standard Avon 9 . That is a coachbuilt body by Avons of Warwick on the 1932 or 1933 Standard Little 9 chassis. Probably a handfull of these cars still exist which is quite good for a coachbuilt car which would only ever have been built in dozens.

I  recently featured this one for sale in the USA for restoration

And this restored one has recently gone to Ireland

Thanks for your interest and best of luck with your book

Thanks and Regards

Phil Homer
