Feature on a 1937 Avon Standard Flying 20 Close Coupled Foursome

photo: Phil Homer

These shots of the 1937 Avon Standard Flying 20 Close-coupled foursome were taken at this year's International Rally at Hatton Park. CLE 580 has recently been returned to road use after a long layup. It is presently fitted with a Vanguard 6 cylinder engine which has been in place since the sixties. The car's owner, from Harlech in Wales, also owns the original six cylinder 20Hp engine and is presently restoring it with a view to reinstalling it in the car. It will then revert to its original specification as, we believe, the only surviving 20Hp version of this model.

The picture above shows the only two known surviving cars with this bodywork, together for the very first time!  The two tone grey car at the rear, which belongs to the Club's registrar, has a 16Hp six-cylinder engine, but otherwise the specification is the same. I am indeed very pleased to have a photograph of these two exceptionally rare and handsome cars together.

I am aware that there are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know.  Please send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Phil Homer
