Feature on an Avon in Bombay

George Soans' Avon at the Bombay Fiesta, 4th February 2007

From our Indian Correspondent:

Just returned from Bombay, participated in the Fiesta organised on 4th Feb by the VCCCI (www.vccci.com)  You can see more pictures here.

There were 2 Standards at the event, both familiar cars. One was Gautam Ashra's 14, and the other was George Soans Avon. While  I met Mr Ashras brother for a few minutes (he was driving the car), i didnt get a chance to meet George. The event was far too crowded and lack of time meant  I missed that chance, and got just a few photos, and not very good ones at that....blame it on the crowds! Couldn't even get both cars together...

(The photos look fine to me! - webmaster!)

I bumped into a friend of mine in the bus on the way home, and he told me of an Avon in Nashik he had seen as a kid in the 60s...he described it as a small, low sports car with cycle fenders up front, small diameter wooden steering wheel, streamlined rear end with spare wheel, but not very powerful...he had offered to pay 500 rupees for the car, but the owner wanted 1500 for it...still a steal!

He also told me of a most interesting project...a sports car he and his brothers built, when they were all (3) around 13 to 18...it was based on a late 30s Flying 9 Tourer! I'm trying to get photos of the car, and more details from him...the car was last spotted in Bombay in the early 90s....

And it appears to be raining Standards in my family...! A relative  I met at the rally in Bombay told me of her fathers 30s 10...she will dig up photos and send them across...

Cheers!

Karl
