Mike Hawthorn's Standard Atlas Van

The Atlas Van in TT Garage Livery

Mike Hawthorn, the famous racing driver and first British Formula One Champion, inherited his father's business on his death in 1954. This was the TT garage in East Street Farnham, Hants. and was the engineering base of his racing enterprises. The garage ran a Standard 10 Van and later the Atlas pictured here.

From the overhangs the Atlas  appears to be an early 948cc version with slam doors and it is though to have been photographed here outside the home of John Adams. John bought the garage business from Mrs Hawthorn after Mike Hawthorns death in 1959.

Mike Hawthorns's life is commemorated in a comprehensive tribute site at http://www.mike-hawthorn.org.uk. If anyone knows the whereabouts of a restorable Atlas, a group of enthsiasts are interesting in building a replica of this van.  Please contact the webmaster in the first instance.
