SLS Archive Shots
Both of these photographs feature
the same model of car, that is the 1919 Model SLS with 2 seater
bodywork. This was the first new Standard model to be built after
the first world war and was a development of the prewar Model S.
The car, driven by two gentlemen, appears to have a second horn
fitted, close to the first, I think this looks like a
"Klaxon" electrically driven horn. Clearly the driver
liked 2 methods of advertising that he was approaching!
The second is a shot of the
village of Aldbury in Hertfordshire, a village I know well.
The car, which is another SLS, with a lady driver, is parked next
to the village pond. The enlargement, which is the maximum I can
achieve with my scanner, shows that the car door, which is only on
the passenger side, is open and the driver appears to be looking
at a passenger out of shot, who has either just alighted from or
is returning to the car. What good fortune to have the only
Standard, or indeed the only car in the village! Apart from the
lack of any other cars, you will find this scene is
identical today, even the pub, with white picket fence and pub
sign is unaltered after 80 odd years. The water in the pond is
somewhat lower and that has allowed reeds to grow around the
perimeter.
Like all good shots over still
water, the picture is almost identical if turned upside down!

If you have archive photos of
Standards, why not share them with other members. All material will
be returned.
I am aware that there are other cars
and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you
have material and photographs, please let me know. Please send me, Phil Homer, a
