BARR FAMILY STANDARD AND TRIUMPH OWNERSHIP 1923 – 2011

The two oldest cars in the current fleet  Len's 1913 Rhyl and Stephen's 1924 Kenilworth.

Longstanding member of the Standard Motor Club, Len Barr has been delving into his family history and photograph albums. In doing so he has found that his family have owned no fewer than 23 Standards and Standard-built Triumphs at one time or another. Also, there have been Standards in the family continuously since 1923.

In many cases Len has been able to supply photographs of the cars, click on the model to go directly to the photograph:

Here are some of the cars listed:

1952 Vanguard Phase 2  KMR 469 towing the trailer with the 1930 Teigmouth VE 4023.   The Teigmouth was purchased from a Newmarket Garage in January 1977, after the Garage abandoned the idea to park the Teigmouth on the Garage Roof as a Garage sign.

Triumph TR2 purchased new in 1955   Taking part in the London Rally organised by the London Motor Club, 16th - 17th September 1955.    My father driving with Chris Rowe as naviagator.    Started at Norwich finished at Ascot.    Early morning on 17th September, driving in the Welsh Mountains.  Dented front wing caused by going into a ditch at 2 am, had to be pulled out by a local farmer with his tractor.

1950 Vanguard Phase 1  BGL 623, owned from 1953 - 1955

1950 Vanguard Phase 1   SEV 563 owned from 1975 - 1977

1949 Vanguard Van, purchased new for use by the family business.  Kept until 1955

1929 Teignmouth, UW 935 as purchased in the January 1977 from David Hanson (Standard Motor Club founder).  This is what the Van now owned by Richard Harvey started life as.  Photo shows my mother, June, a youthful me aged 10, and our dog - Tinka.

1959 Vanguard Phase 3 Vignale Estate

1935 Standard 10 Saloon - Not the Barr family example but an identical car purchased on the same  day.  One morning in 1935, my Great Grandfather - William George Wells spent a whole morning at the local Clacton on Sea garage who were agents for both Standard and Austin.   By the end of the morning he had purchased three new cars.    Two 1935 Standard Ten's for his two children (my grandmother Marion Barr) and her brother William.   He also purchased a 1935 Austin 20 limousine for his wife.   This photo shows the 1935 Ten owned by my grandmother's brother.

If you have a history of "Standards" in your family, please write in and tell the Club all about them.
