1924 V3 Kenilworth ( left ) with 1926 SLO4 Charlecote

Paul Newsome writes from Dunchurch, Warwickshire:

"A photograph taken of two surviving 1920’s Standards.

The mid green car is a V3 1924 Kenilworth owned by Robert Browett. H.A.Browett & Co. Ltd. of Leicester purchased the car in early 1946 by Robert’s grandfather Henry A. Browett who was then a Standard Distributor. H.A.Browett & Co. Ltd. had first been appointed to represent The Standard Motor Company in 1931, seven years after the car was built. It is with the other car in the picture, the only remaining Standards still owned by the direct descendants of the owners of Standard Dealers from the very early pre-war period.

The maroon car is an SLO4 1926 Charlecote Coupe owned by Paul Newsome. This car was purchased by S.H.Newsome & Co. Ltd. in 1963 from Anthony Harrison, who was an Apprentice Trainee at the factory. This was on the suggestion of John Davy, the founder of the Standard Register, as S.H.Newsome & Co. Ltd. had been appointed a Standard Distributor in 1926, the year the car was manufactured. The car was rebuilt in 1963-4 by Paul with the help of the S.H.Newsome staff and has been used regularly by Paul for the last 42 years.

The two cars are shown at Marlborough School in August 2006. Reginald Maudslay attended Marlborough in the 1880’s and went on to found the Standard Motor Company in 1905. A total of some 15 cars visited Marlborough School on "MAUDSLAY’S ALMA MATER RUN", Organised by Len Barr a member of the Standard Motor club but on this occasion for the Standard Register.

Paul & Robert both are keen supporters of the Standard Motor Club and of the continuing use of early cars on the road as they were intended to be used. They both except to be out this coming year at several events and well supported by their families who are also strong supporters of the Club. Please bring out your early cars to support us."
