Restoration of a 924 SLO4 in India

The SLO4 is
resplendent in its new paintwork
Dear Phil,
I own a Standard Coventry 1924 model. Body Style- Touring Torpedo.
It is in mint condition. It was bought by my father and has been
lying in the garage for 76 years. The car is in the process of
being restored. In the first long run the car travelled a distance
of 65 kms, and attained a high speed of 45 km/hr. The engine,
gearbox and steering wheel remain untouched. Could you let me have
details of the upholstery and canopy. I would also appreciate any
details regarding this model, as I am unable to procure the same
in India. I would also like to know if I could seek your advice in
matters regarding restoration of the car.
Thanking you, Yours
truly,
RM Muthiah
Hi Mr Muthiah
Hello,
Thanks for sending some pictures of your car. It appears to be
similar but not the same as the 1924 SLO4 that is on the website,
here
http://www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/images/veteran/1926SLO4.jpg
The main difference is that yours has a backwards slanting
windscreen whereas the red one is vertical. (though i have seen
others with slanting screens) The other difference
is that yours has later wire wheels I would be grateful if you
could send me the commission number and any other history that you
have of the car so that we can identify it more closely. I will
then be able to advise you regarding the restoration. Not that you
need much advice of course, the car looks super in its new
paint, which must closely match the original colour?
I hope to hear from you again soon
Kind Regards,
Phil Homer
Dear Mr. Phil,
Many thanks for your prompt reply to my e-mail. I am unable to understand
what you mean by Commission number. I am giving below:
Engine number: 44636
Chassis number: 44528
Number of cylinders: 4
Engine Capacity: 14 HP/1600 CC
Commission No.2135
This car was imported into India and registered in Madras (now called Chennai)
under registration number: MSC 1583. On reviewing a few Vintage Car books, I
have decided to have the leather
seats in the same colour as the body paint. The canopy would be in a dark grey
canvas material.
Could you tell me how the speedometer cable is connected, as we are unable to
identify the link.
I require a wheel rim for the car, would you have any source to procure the
same? If you would require any specific information regarding the car, it
would be my pleasure to assist you. Thanking you and awaiting your response,
Yours truly,
RM. Muthiah
Hi, Mr Muthiah
I am presently unable to identify your car as the numbers you give
don't match my records. Also a 14Hp car would have an engine of
1994 ccs. I will do more work to try to identify you car.
However, regarding the speedometer;
There should be a pulley on the propshaft, immediately behind the
gearbox and this drives another pulley via a small belt. The
second pulley drives a speedo cable that drives the speedometer. I
hope you can find all this.
Regards,
Phil Homer
