Webmaster's SLO Archive Photos
Len Barr writes from
Cirencester, he has been going through his drawers again and has
sent this article and photos of one of the Webmaster's cars.
"On doing some file tidying
recently, I came across the attached four photographs of your
1921 SLO, XD 9979, which were taken in the late 1950's when the
car was owned by H.E. Hall a motor engineer who ran a business
in Rowlands Castle, Hampshire. Mr Hall rescued your car
from a breakers yard at Lee on Solent in 1954. He kept the
car until his death in July 1964. His widow then sold the
car to Don Pinhorn whom I am sure you are aware kept it until he
entered it in the Auction at Beaulieu in 1994. I will
leave it for you to decide if you want to put them on the web
site or whether you just want to keep them for your own use.
Best wishes
Len Barr"
Thanks Len,
The car has not done
a serious amount of work since I bought it in the auction you
mention, but it is
roadworthy and I run it occasionally. It was necessary to have the
engine rebuilt a few years back due to lack of oil pressure to the
overhead valves. It was hardly surprising that the pressure was
low, as the oil pump is little bigger than the one on our SLS,
yet was expected to feed not only the 4 little ends through pipes
up the con-rods but also to pump oil up to the rocker arms,
neither of which were requirements on the SLS. Our conversion
included removing the oil splash guard meaning that the little
ends are now splash lubricated which also means the there is
plenty, well at least some, pressure left from the pump to reach the rocker
shaft.
Here are Lens
pictures, I
suspect that the location still exists, so if anyone knows where
it is, please let me know so I can reproduce the scene.
The car looks like
this today, 2004:
