| "Triumph
- Sport and Elegance"

You are probably aware that in
terms of a marque history, Standard has been largely ignored, there
having been only two books covering the company's history - the
first being by John Davy in 1967 and the second by Brian Long in
1993.
Both of these books are long out
of print, though second hand copies are sometimes available from
the Regalia Section
of the Club.
There are of course many more
histories written about the Triumph marque and since the companies
were the same post 1945, there is naturally an interest in these
books for Standard owners.
"Triumph - Sport and
Elegance" is a case in point.
This new book, published by Haynes, authored by Bill Piggott and
edited by Jon Presnell, is a comprehensive description of all
Triumph models, including every postwar Triumph, TR and
derivatives such as the Swallow Doretti and Peerless. It also
features the Standard models that were instrumental in development
of the Triumphs, such as the Vanguard and the Standard 8 and 10.
The book correctly acknowledges the Standard lineage and that no
Triumph would exist without the intervention of Standards Sir John
Black who purchased the defunct Triumph company in 1945.
Lavishly illustrated in colour
this is a comprehensve "Coffee table" volume running to
175 pages though it only features 15 pages of Prewar Triumphs. None of the subject matter is new save perhaps the
coverage for the first time of the Standard version of the Herald,
that is the "Gazelle" produced in India. The book is also punctuated
with honest driving impressions of significant models and tips and
buying advice.
Some things to please the
Standard enthusiast then, but don't expect too much Standard
coverage from what is after all a Triumph book.
