The featured photos were taken
at the Opening Ceremony of the Pontypool Annual Carnival in what
is believed to be 1936. The occupants of the Standard Flying 12
Drophead Coupe are Amy Johnson, seen waving to the crowds,
accompanied by her husband, Jim Mollison. Both of them were of
course pioneer aviators of the period and major celebrities,
probably the reason why they have a two man police escort!
The car came from Winsors
Garage in Albion Road, Pontypool and is driven byTrevor Winsor.
As I believe the factory did not build a 12 DHC until early
1937, if the date of these photographs is correct, then this
must be a coachbuilt saloon, probably by Avon. I can distinguish
differences in the quarterlights, header-rail and hood fastners,
windscreen, door cappings and treatment of the hood and hood
irons. Unfortunately, it is impossible to see rear end detail
where there would doubtlessly be more differences to the '37
factory model. Hence I have never seen evidence of this
model before and no evidence of Avon bodying this chassis prewar.
Unless you know different.................
I am grateful to Bob and Phyll
Bridgett for supplying these photos, which will become part of
the Club's archives.
