The Standard
Eight Woody Page
Hi,
I was wondering if you could
help me, I have enclosed 4 pictures of a 1948 Standard 8.
This
car belonged to my father in 1963, but I haven't seen another
Standard like this one since.
It had a wooden body, and I think it originally belonged to
Uptons who were farmers at
Margaretting, Essex, associated with Reckit and Colemans.
If you could tell me any
information at all about this car it would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Mr Michael Gowers.
Hi
Michael,
It's a Standard 8
Woody estate and was made from 1945 -1948. Its the fifth variant
of the Model, there were also 2 door saloons, a Drophead Coupe, a
Tourer and I have a brochure for a 4 door saloon, though I have
never seen one and don't know if one exists or was ever made?
Certainly, the Woody
Estate was also a rare vehicle, even in its day, it was made
because there was a shortage of affordable steel just after the
war. I don't know who made it or whether it was authorised by the
factory, as I have never seen a brochure. Like yours, I think that
the majority were used as farm implements for driving across
ploughed fields, so its not surprising that so few survive. In
fact I am only aware of one and that belongs to club committee
member, David Groom. I picture that below:

As I mentioned above, I
now have a brochure for the 4 door "8" saloon, so look out
for a feature on that soon...................
I am aware that there
are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more
comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know. Please
send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Phil
