Flying
20 Saloon
.jpg)
Phil
My brother Graham and I took my Swallow Doretti
to the Tom Rolt Rally at Towyn on the Talyllyn Railway in Mid
Wales on the Spring Bank Holiday Sunday 25th May. There were
hardly any Standard Triumph products there at all and the only
Standard was the Flying 20 shown which has a family
connection.
For
many years, it belonged to
my second cousin Janet May and her husband Mike, who also owns a
TR3 and is well known in our sister club the TR Register. It sat
at their windmill home at Attleborough in Norfolk for many years
languishing in a barn whilst Janet and Mike tried to sort out a
means of repairing the straight 6 engine where the crank was
already 60 thou undersized and couldn't be reground
further.
I
engineered its sale to Phil Birch, then our 8 and 10 spares
officer, and he in turn sold it to the current owner, a friend of
Phil's from Malvern, who replaced the engine with that from an
MGB, which he told us required surprisingly few modifications so
that it could easily be rebuilt to original. Unfortunately he
has been quoted £3,500 for a new crankshaft!
Both
Phil Birch and I have tried to persuade the owner to join
the Club,so far to no avail. He owns a classic caravan and
several classic vehicles and so claims he can't be in every
club.
Report
and Photos: Peter Lockley
Hi Peter,
I make this about a 1938 model.
It was rare then and of course it is rare now,. Thanks for sharing
these photos with us.
Unusual cars sometimes turn up at
local shows like this so please, members don't forget to take a
camera with you and let me know if you find anything. Like Peter's
handiwork, the results will appear here

Your car can be
preserved on the Internet, forever! I am always pleased
to see stories of Standard restorations, including photos,
some taken during the process if possible. Send them to webmaster@standardmotorclub.org.uk
