1945 Standard 8 DHC Restoration Feature

1945 Standard 4/8A Drophead Coupe Restored in Switzerland

Werner Maurer has spent the last 9 years restoring this car in Switzerland and you must agree that it is absolutely  a first class restoration!

I well remember the sunny day in 1994 when I picked up  Werner from Stanstead Airport. His intention was to buy FDU 219, which had been advertised in the club magazine, sight unseen,  from a barn in deepest rural Hertfordshire. The car had not run for many years but we cleaned the plugs and points, blew up the tyres and put some petrol in it. Much to our amazement, the car started, money changed hands and we were away down the A10 towards London! After a while we stopped at a garage to put in more petrol. We stopped when the petrol reached the rotten rubber filler pipe and overflowed onto the forecourt!

Undeterred, the mad Swiss person declared his intention to continue on his way to Zurich!. We waved goodbye and Werner headed off towards the M25 in his 50 year old car (with no Tax or MoT!) We fully expected not to see him again!

Two days later the phone rang. The car had stalled whilst loading onto the ferry and had to be pushed on board. At Calais, Werner was pushed off the boat, was able to fix the ignition and carried on for the 600 miles across France. It was now safely in his Garage! He told me he was determined to restore the car and would bring it one day to the National Rally in England.

That day has almost arrived! FDU219 is entered for the International Rally at Hatton World on July 12th and 13th, so you will all get the opportunity to see Werner's favourite new car, and congratulate him for his efforts!

The interior is equally stunning

Ready for its 1200 mile round trip to the Rally!

The car was purchased from Mrs. N.A. Cleret, Keepers Cottage, Newsells Village, Royston. The car was registered in the name of her late husband Alan George F Cleret.

Date of first registration: 1.9.1945. Chassis No. NA21CP, Engine No. NA3426. Imported to Switzerland on 17.10.94
