| The
1st Registered Trademark

"The registered trademark of
the Standard motor Company's a symbol of more than ordinary
significance.
The reproduction of it shown here
is based on what is probably one of the most ancient military
trophies of British interest in existence. This Roman standard was
in use by the armies of Rome early in the first century. It is
thought that the original, discovered in Essex in 1827, was used
by troops who sustained the sole military disaster which overtook
the Romans in the reign of Nero, when the IXth legion on the
way to relieve Colchester in AD61, was annihilated by Britons
under the leadership of Boadicea, Queen of the Iceni.
Thus this trademark most aptly
symbolises, not only a play on the name "Standard" but
British superiority and success. The original Standard was of
yellow bronze, 17 inches high and represents four wreaths of
laurel leaves and berries. mounted on a wooden shaft."
The Standard reproduced above has
been spoilt and is shown in a compressed format. If you wish
to use it elsewhere, please contact the webmaster who will supply
a high definition unspoilt version.
