| Feature
on an SS II

The 1934 SSII
photographed at Kemble Airfield this summer
The SSII was a product
of Swallow Sidecars who had been producing cars in Blackpool from
1922. The cars were initially built on a selection of chassis bought
in from Austin, Morris, Swift, Fiat, Wolsley and Standard.
The original Series I
SSII of 1931 used the Standard Little Nine chassis
Look closely and you
will see that this Series II SSII comprises a lightly modified 1934 Standard
12Hp chassis, clothed in new bodywork -
created by William Lyons.
The only differences
that I can spot on the chassis are a couple of additions:
apart from that that,
the mechanical components are all pure Standard. The attractive two
door, four-seater fixed head coupe style bodywork is finished in a
most pleasing dark plum shade with black fabric covered roof and
boot. The interior is finished in red leather and the car has a
stylish set of circular instruments set in hexagonal bezels. There
is a fabric covered sunroof and the wood framed boot is a separate
item bolted to the rear of the bodywork and itself carrying an
externally mounted spare within a cover
