Len and Stephen
Barr, Grandma on left and Mum on right, with 11 BKX at a picnic on
Minchinghampton Common in the 1970's
Len Barr writes from
Cirencester:
"Very interested in the
picture of the two Sportsman in action. The rear of the
two cars looks like it carries Registration number 11 BKX.
Can you see more from the original - am I correct? (yes,
you are! - Webmaster)
11 BKX was owned by the late Tom
Yates (father of Brian Yates) who sold it to my father in 1972.
Tom had restored the car. Quite a lot of my childhood
motoring was in this car, it also use to tow the trailer with
the 1924 Kenilworth on.
I was aware that my father sold
the car to L and B Motors (We believe - certainly it was sold
to a garage in London) in about 1975, to a chap who was
going to use it for racing. Part of a "deal" which
also involved them respraying my fathers 1953 Phase 2
Vanguard.
I did hear later that the car
was then crashed?
I will dig out some other pictures
of 11 BKX (it may take a week or so) and send them to you.
You might like to construct an article Before and After in the
life of a Sportsman! Some pictures even contain me in
them, looking over 30 years younger!
Incidentally, you will be
aware that they only built 905 Sportsman, well for the useless
information department, 11 BKX was the 682nd example!"

I am aware that there are other cars
and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you
have material and photographs, please let me know. Please send me, Phil Homer, a
