Phase 1 Vanguard  Restoration

Superb Vanguard Restoration shows what can be achieved!

This Vanguard made its first appearance at an International Rally in the Summer of 2007, winning two awards for it's owner Kim Archer:

  • Vanguards I and II - first in Class

  • Overall Car of the Show

This is the story of its restoration, from 2005:

Vanguard Owners - does this look familiar?.......................

Don't despair, with hard work, perseverance, help and encouragement from the club, you can turn the above into a Vanguard that looks like this! These are the same car

This Vanguard is all the work of Kim Archer who has recently finished the restoration of his car. One of it's first outings was to join Ian Leggetts recent Suffolk Tour at the Ipswich Transport Museum where these  "after" shots were taken.

Kim describes this heroic piece of works as follows:

"MDD 200 was purchased several years ago as a rusted out non runner. It has taken some time to accumulate all the required parts necessary for the rebuild. Restoration started seriously 2yrs ago welding up the body to make it rigid enough to remove from the chassis. This involved removing the front wings to repair behind and making and fitting new inner and outer sills. The bottom of the front wings also had to be replaced the bottom of all the doors, boot and the guttering. The body was then lifted of the chassis. The chassis was completely stripped shot blasted and repainted.

All mechanical items were then overhauled repainted and reassembled. The axle and gearbox were in good order just needing new oil seals. The engine needed a complete rebuild and is now using standard size pistons and liners again. The clutch and braking system were renewed fitting copper brake pipes for low maintenance. The front suspension had worn out completely and was again replaced.

Next the body was re-sprayed not in the cars original colour black but in an optional colour for the time blue. This was then lifted back onto the chassis. The brightwork was re-chromed and refitted. The windscreen was renewed with laminated glass, the rear and side windows were polished with scratch remover and refitted with new front and rear rubbers. A new wiring loom was then installed.

The interior was re-trimmed in beige with black carpets and door piping. Once M.o.T’d after an absence from the road since the late sixties, it was found to be running hot so I had the radiator re-cored, curing the problem. It has now done just over 100 miles since its rebuild. My many thanks must go to Paul Robins, Brian Shakespeare and Ian Leggett to whom without, this car would not be back on the road"
