1952 Vanguard
1A Estate,
owned by Peter Lockley
For a couple of
years now, I have wrongly been describing this estate as a Phase
2. Only today Peter has chosen to correct me, thank you and
apologies, Peter.
I do want this site
to be 100% historically accurate, so if you have seen other
annoying mistakes PLEASE TELL ME NOW.

This is Peter's second Standard. After
completing his first, a fifties Standard 8, Peter was looking round for another car to
restore when he found this very rare Phase 1A Estate Car. The car was mostly
rotten and
required much welding, particularly in the floor area, and most of the body panels needed
repair or replacement. After a couple of years hard work, the car was ready to be
repainted in its original colour, and the result you see here today. The car is now in
regular use for shows. The photograph shows the side view of this splendid car.
Peter
adds the following information, on 10th Feb 2004, on how
to distinguish a Phase 1A Estate from a Phase 2 Estate:
Apart
from the different front grille, a phase 2 estate has a
different bonnet mascot(a rocket),a body colour dashboard and
internal window surrounds (they are light grey on a 1A) and a
hydraulic clutch with a twin master cylinder (same as a TR2 and
Doretti). A Phase 1A has a mechanical clutch. A phase 2 would
also have a pressurised cooling system. The bodyshells of the 1A
and 2 estates are the same. There was however a two door Phase 2
estate as well as the four door version. Does anyone know of one
still in existence?
Regards,
Peter
I am aware that there are other cars
and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you
have material and photographs, please let me know. Please send me, Phil Homer, a
