Another Standard Mystery is resolved

Above and below, an early 30's Standard on unmade New Zealand roads

 Hi Phil

Standard of possibly about 1930 vintage owned by my great-uncle Alexander Drummond, pictured with his son Basil. Photo understood to have been taken in early 1930s, probably at Tapawera, Nelson, where my great-uncle farmed.  I would be interested to know if any members can identify the exact year and model of this car?,

> Hi Rod,
I am almost certain this is a 1933/4 Standard Twenty Special Coachbuilt Saloon. The additional equipment specification included the second spare wheel and tyre, the only Standard of that era I can find that has six wheels.

There could only have been a handfull of these made, so for one to make it to NZ is quite a surprise. Road Tax on a 20Hp car here was very expensive at the time, perhaps less  so in NZ?

I will publish the photos in the Post Vintage Archives. (its actually in the "What is it?" section )

Regards,
Phil Homer

Phil

Many thanks for the information - I had no idea that this was such a rare model. Would be interested in any further info re this model that you may find. As far back as I can remember, there has been a flat road tax licensing fee in NZ for private cars, regardless of engine size, right
back to 1925 when the Post Office took over vehicl licensing on a national basis from local councils. A variable initial registration fee, depending on engine size, was in force however for several years in the 1970s to discourage purchases of cars with heavy fuel consumption.

Regards,
Rod

I am aware that there are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know.  Please send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Phil Homer
