Competition
Number 2 - Answer

The
mystery "petals" against a ruler
These "petal"
shaped pieces made from a soft Lead alloy really did cause a
problem!
They are each about 2
cm long. There are 20 plus of these on a 1934 Standard and they
are all identically shaped. I have no reason to doubt that they
are probably on every Standard or indeed most cars of the era.
They are normally invisible in everyday use but you would be in no
doubt that they are there. What are they and what do they do?
Answer, when you are
driving the car, you are feeling these pieces all of the time. They are
on the back of the steering wheel and shape the wheel to give the
feel of a grip, so it doesn't slip though your hands. They are
normally covered by the early black bakelite-type coating that forms
the cover of the wheel. If you strip off the coating, or as in my
case, it has fallen off, the lead petals fall away.
I didn't get a single correct
answer.........
Hence the prize will roll over
for the second time. The next competition will have THREE prizes. Come back soon!
Ideas for further competitions
are welcomed. Send them to webmaster@standardmotorclub.org.uk.
Good luck!
