Our "Price Comparison" Website

"THE SMC IS TOO EXPENSIVE TO JOIN"

I have compared the price of joining 8 comparable Classic Car Clubs in the UK.  To do this I have compared equivalent levels of membership and included joining fees. Many Clubs offer a small discount in 2nd and subsequent years of membership , including the SMC. Note also that all of the more popular marques receive trade support in terms of paid for advertising in their magazines, the SMC generally does not, as we have no trade specialists.

The results are listed in descending order of price:

UK Fee European Fee
Vintage Sports Car Club £85 £87
TR Register £41 £47
Triumph Sports Six Club £40 £44
Jaguar Drivers Club £38 £40
Stag Owners Club £37 £42
Standard Motor Club £28 £33
Morris Minor Owners Club £24 £27

A30 and A35 Owners Club

£23

£ not quoted

Prices correct at 21st Jan 2009. Note that I am a volunteer with insufficient time to check every other club's prices. This is therefore a selection.

Note that both the MMOC and the A30/A35 OC, the only cheaper clubs here,  both have many thousands of members each so benefit greatly from bulk discounts they can obtain for printing of their magazines.  Note that many of our competitor clubs do not have the expense of running a Spares Scheme

I therefore contest that the SMC, with sub 1000 members and little or no trade support, is relatively cheap to join, and demonstrates the cost effectiveness with which this club is run. Note also that your Club constantly monitors the market to ensure we offer good value for money.

Good evening Phil,

Very interesting to read your comparison of the membership costs of different Clubs.  I agree that the SMC is good value and in fact I have thought for some time that it is too good value.

I think the Club should charge substantially more - but I suspect that I am in a minority!

Keep up the good work.
