The only two
Standards outside the RAF Museum
The numbers were rather
down, with only two Standards, one Triumph and another member in his
modern car. But, bad luck to the rest of you - who missed a wonderful day
out in the late September sunshine.
Fortunately a number of
members from our "other" Vauxhall club and assorted other
friends in a TR4A and a prewar Riley joined us at the "Royal
Oak" near Hitchin for Sunday lunch. This is an event for people who
like to use their cars rather than stand about in a field, or worse
still, prefer to stay at home all day, while the sun shines outside.
The roadrun took us this
year from deepest rural Hertfordshire into North London, finishing at
the RAF museum at Hendon. By co-incidence, the Rolls-Royce owners Club
had already arrived so we made a line-up immediately opposite them in
front of the museum and well away from the public parking. We would like
to think that the Standards and Vauxhalls made a more interesting
display!
The RAF museum is
staggering in its size and diversity - and it is free. An example of
almost everything that has ever flown for the RAF is there, including
Lancaster, Wellington, Lightning and even the Sunderland Flying boat.
Unfortunately the boat was closed, but one is normally able to walk
through its huge interior. Best of all we thought was the audio visual
presentation in the darkened "Battle of Britain" Hall. Against
the backdrop of Spitfires and Hurricanes that actually took part, this
was the highlight of the afternoon.
We caught up with most of
the tour party in the restaurant later and there was general agreement
about the quality of the displays and how worthwhile the whole
event had been
