on the Classic Motor Show 2006, at the NEC

The Classic Car Show is
already the largest Indoor show for our hobby in the country and it seems
to get bigger every year. This year the show occupied Halls 1 to 4. Its
also three days long, Friday to Sunday, this in effect makes it a 4 day
show as Thursday becomes the set-up day. The theme of the show was
anniversaries or birthdays. As it was 70 year since the launch of the
Flying Standard range, that was the club's chosen theme.
Amongst the 4 Flying
Standards was my Flying 12 Drophead Coupe, the first time that this has
appeared at an indoor show. As it happens, Thursday was a bright sunny and
moderately warm day, so I was able to have the hood down for the whole 40
miles or so of the trip from Stow to the NEC. I was the first to arrive at
around 10am. As the stand wasn't built, nor was I even sure of where its
outline was, I left the car approximately where I thought that it should
be. Unfortuantely I had a business appointment in London so couldn't
wait for the others to arrive. So whilst I was on the train to Euston, the
others arrived to set up the stand, Peter Lockley, Steve Smeltzer, Lynda
Homer, Ivan Hancock, Steve O'Hara, Tony Pingriff and Mike Wilkes.
Friday apparently was a
quite day, but Saturday and Sunday were much busier, those being the days
that Lynda and I were able to attend.
Saturday night was
prizegiving time and although your club did not win any prizes, we all
thought that we deserved one for "The strangest shaped club stand at
the Show" This was because we occupied a long wall, the stand being
35 metres long by just 3 metres wide. Stand of the show went to the
Daimler and Lanchester Owners and the Car of the Show was a Daimler SP250.
Lots of Club members came to
see us over the weekend including Dennis and Shelia Brown and Phil Birch.
We also recruited 5 more new members.
The four show cars are shown
in the thumbnails below, if you click on them, each will open up a one
page description and background to the car. These are the descriptions
that we placed on lecterns next to each of the cars. (Yours truly had
spent the week before making these and they are now available for use at
future shows)
The descriptions require
Adobe Acrobat to be running on your desktop. If you don't have it, click here
first)
