Standard Register Rally

Most of the
participants in Cotton House Dining Room, Marlborough School
The Register Rally, for
Standards built in and before 1930, was held in August, based at Milton
Hill House in Oxfordshire. Nearly 20 cars and their owners and
partners attended.
Friday was assembly day at
the Hotel, some of the party availing themselves of the pool, whilst others
sunned themselves on the Terrace. An evening meal in the Willow Room
rounded off the day.
Saturday was the main Rally
day. Everyone was given their route instructions and off we set on a 34
mile roadrun through deepest Oxfordshire, then across the Lambourne Downs
to our destination at Marlborough. Much interest in the convoy as the cars
passed through Marlborough's Market Square, with no casualties along the
way - a creditable performance considering that many of the cars are near
or over 90 years old! On arrival at Marlborough
College we were greeted by the
Archivist and treated to a guided tour. You can read about Maudslay's
schooldays here. The visit was followed by a short walk into
Marlborough and lunch at the Ivy House Hotel.
A little time for the ladies
( and Harry! ) to do their shopping, then back to the cars. The run back
was a longer affair taking in the Savernake Forest.
Unfortuantely, the
planned visit to a pumping station on the Kennet and Avon canal had to be
cancelled ( as the place was shut! ) Again no casualties on the return
run.
Saturday night saw another
evening meal, this time with our guests Chris and Vivienne Cunnington.
Chris is General Manager of the TR Register. Lynda excelled by answering
all but one of the quizz questions and won a box of chocolates as a prize
( Hey Len, there were two names on the entry sheet!) Never mind, I can eat
them, as she doesn't much like chocolates - how about that for having a
wife that's cheap on
running costs then?
Sunday was a more relaxed
affair - a shorter drive ending at a huge " Millets
Garden Centre", more
like a pleasure park for adults and children, and doing a roaring trade.
The roadrun back to the hotel was followed by loading of the trailers, for
myself and many others. Congratulations must go to those that completed
the whole journey end to end by "rallying to the event" and
indeed " rallying home again"
Altogether, a splendid
weekend, ably organised by Len Barr. All the participants thank you Len!
