What a lovely day! Our road run
started from Sourton Services at 10.30 a.m. with our organiser for the
day, Chris Bowden, in the lead and Peter Hallam in his 1930 Ensign Six
behind with yours truly as navigator. Chris set a scorching pace down
into Okehampton and onto the Hatherleigh road, Peter kept up very
well, mind you he did have six cylinders under the bonnet. Chris had
the foresight to provide us all with route sheets but that did not
stop us from ending up in farmyard once! We passed through one rain
shower which allowed Peter to demonstrate to me the effectiveness of a
6 volt screen wiper, who needs wipers, I use Rainex!!
When we arrived at Bradworthy Motor
Museum we had a line-up of five Standards and one Triumph plus a few
moderns for those whose cars were off the road – like mine!
Car details were as follows:-
!955 Ten, Peter Starbuck
1934 Ten, Colin Fry
1934 Ten, Steve Lovegrove
!930 Ensign Six, Peter Hallam
1947 Eight, Chris Bowden
1947 Triumph 1800 Roadster, Peter
Clark
In addition, in moderns were John
Pine and family, Ian Stoneman and family, Andrew Tillotson, Ann and
Tony Skilton who were the chauffeurs of Dorothy and myself for the
weekend. My apologies for anyone I have forgotten.
We all viewed with admiration all the
vehicles on display, many cars, commercial vehicles and tractors. I
was quite taken with Beresford-Stork fire pump, needless to say. The
café provided great grub for the hungry ones and the weather stayed
fine still.
Thanks must go to Chris for putting
the visit together for us and if we had a long-haul award I think it
should go to Peter Hallam for travelling all the way up from
St.Austell, in a Standard which everyone admired and one which had
only been tested on local runs and he was still fettling, just before
departure, I understand. Well done Peter. Everyone is now looking
forward to the Killerton Rally on 1 June, Powderham Castle Rally on
5/6 July, details from Chris Bowden on 01392-664952, West of England
Rally on 15-17 August, details from myself on 01872-560477 or Peter
Hallam on 01726-73834.
Also I have undertaken to organise a
visit to Bodmin and Wenford Steam Railway in the autumn. Watch this
space.
