Flying 12 DHC
goes on its holidays - Part 8
Day 10 - Dartmoor to Bristol
Once more we
were on the road, we decided to follow the slower, hilly "old" road
to Exeter, then the A30 to Honiton, the A303 then the
A37 towards Bristol. All pleasant, steady driving with an average cruising
speed of around 45 mph. We arrived on the outskirts of Bristol
in the late afternoon, and found our overnight stop at the Premier
Inn, Alveston, next to a vast old pub, The Ship.
Day 11 - Into Wales!
From
Alveston we drove over the M48 Severn Bridge (£5.30 toll!) into
Wales, where the Flying 12 travelled through wooded valleys and over
some steep hills on B roads to Raglan. Here we called on Dennis and
Sheila Brown. We swapped tales about our travels in our Standard
cars and look forward to Dennis' article about their adventures
going to Shetland this year. An excellent lunch at the Beauford Inn
set us up to continue our journey into mid Wales. From Raglan
to Abergaveny, Builth Wells then Llandrindod Wells where we had five
nights booked at the Metropole Hotel.
As we
parked up and saw many familiar vehicles our sense of anticipation
grew. We got to reception hearing loud, excited conversations and
were greeted by lots of old friends, all animated and full of
news of the past year or so.
There are about 30 cars involved in the
Friends of Llangollen Rali, other Standard
Club members here are Brian and Betty Parkes, David and Judith Over,
Len Barr, Mike and Pat Beavis and Charles Brotherton. The Fying 12 feels
it has come home!
It
shouldn't be necessary to tell you by now that it is still
raining.
