Flying 12 DHC goes on its holidays Part 7

The Flying 12 outside the Dartmoor Inn

Day 8: Looe to Newton Abbott via Dartmoor - More Otter Ales

We said goodbye and "thank you" to our hosts Hazel and Ross at the Trelaske Hotel, which we would recommend. After loading the car boot we set off via Liskeard to Tavistock in time for our lunch stop. Then on to the long climb onto Dartmoor, the Dartmoor Inn proving a handy place to cool the car's engine down and allow the driver and passenger time to sample more Otter Ale. The weather remained kind enough for us to enjoy the views as we continued at a leisurly pace over the Moor stopping as the whim took us. Eventually we descended off the moor, crossing the Dart river twice, into Ashbuton and onto the A38 for the short run to our next stop at Sapmson's Farm Hotel in the tiny hamlet of Preston. The farmhouse dates back to around 1450, and our comfortable room was in the eaves under the thatch. We had driven far enough that day and so, after a short rest, we enjoyed an excellent dinner in the restaurant.

Day 9 - At the Christow Village Show

We were very pleased that Chris and Linda Bowden phoned to confirm that they were going to the Christow Show the next day. The Flying 12 DHC was the first Standard to arrive at this small, friendly event. Soon Chris and Linda arrived in their post war 8 Saloon. Shortly afterwards we were joined by John and Julia Pine in a Little 9, with their son Simon and grand-daughter Amelia, then Colin Fry arrived in his Standard 10 De Luxe Saloon. A good turnout of Standards! By now the drizzle had turned to heavier rain so we all took refuge in the tea tent.

As lunch time approached we ventured out into the village to try the food and more Otter beer at the Artichoke pub in the village. On our return to the Show field we found our other Standard friends had made a move, and we were not long in following the example since the grass was rapidly turning to slippery mud and the rain showed no sign of stopping.

Thank you to Linda and Chris and the other Devon Standard owners for making us so welcome and for finding a local event for us to join in with, since the Steam Fair at Truro had been cancelled the week before due to the poor weather prognosis.
