Smeltzer's Vintage Tour of Irish Bars!

Steve, after his thrash around Mondello
Park!
On making arrangements to attend this
years Gordon Bennett Rally in Ireland, Dennis and Sheila Brown, Bob
and Val Richardson and myself decided to spend a few days after the
rally touring in Southern Ireland.
You have already read reports
on the rally itself so I
won't dwell on that, apart from to mention that our high
speed laps around Mondello Park race circuit were the
highlight for me. Another high was the fact that my car
kept finding it's way to Osborne's bar all of it's own
accord.
Having said our goodbyes to
David and Harry Groom, Len Barr and Steve O'Hara we stayed
for one more night in our B&B at the magnificent
Sherwood Park House. The following morning we motored
down the coast to a very chilly Wexford. It was so cold that
we soon headed for our accommodation for the next two nights
just outside Rosslare. On arrival we found the landlady was
out, so most of our party insisted on going to the local bar
(I tagged along- just to be polite of course). We spent a
pleasant evening consuming the odd Guinness and watching the
cricket on TV.

Our visit to the
lighthouse |
The next morning we decided to
visit Rosslare resort which is supposed to be a seaside
resort. Suffice to say we left after about five minutes and
drove down the south coast to Ardmore lighthouse. There,
some of us elected for a guided tour of the lighthouse led
by a lovely young lady doing her first day of tours.
Her description of part of the mechanism to rotate the
lantern was "a kind of clockworky windy uppy
thing".
We also visited Tramore
where we parked the cars on the beach, Kilmore Quay for
lunch and a drop of Guinness, and an ancient windmill before
returning to our B&B and the local bar for a swift half.

The following day we went to
the Irish Agricultural Museum and it's magnificent gardens.
The museum was very interesting and even had mention of our
own Sir John Black. Then it was time to return to our
accommodation and a little drop of Guinness, pausing on the
way to photograph my car beside a highly appropriate advert
painted on a bar wall.
All too soon it was time to
board our ferry and head for home via an uneventful run
down the A40 to Dennis and Sheila's house for a welcome of
tea.

An appropriate advert on a bar |
My car covered over 800 miles during
the trip with no problems other than the battery overcharging
on the return trip, not bad for an 82 year old car.
