The Manchester Group Stand won the Show cup for Second Place, out of 92 Club Stands at the Tatton Classic Car Show.
Unusually this time we didn’t get awards for any of the 50
cars showing on our stand over the weekend from the Tatton show
organisers, however this cup was a very good result for the Stand
which themed both the Standard and Triumph cars and some interesting
guests vehicles.
It was good to have Peter Lockley, Chairman of the Standard Motor
Club with us on Saturday, to help present the club prizes,
and see the rare 1950’s Swallwo Doretti sports car (built by
the Swallow Coach building Company of Walsall) which caught much
attention. Thanks to Mike Wilkes who always gives our Group great
support, and a welcome to Malcolm Graham also a Club member who
travelled up from the
Midlands
.
The novelty on our Stand on the Sunday was a kit car type model
with a Flying Standard 8 engine owned by Walter (Wally) Aimers from
Liverpool, and this attracted considerable interest from the
visiting public and other Classic car owners (reference to a photo of
this car in Brian Long's reference book "illustrated History of
the Standard Motor Company"). This prompted some
interesting discussion amongst club members, over tea and
biscuits in the new club marquees, about their memories and the
history of the old Standard factories at
Coventry
.
Club prizes over the weekend in ‘Standard and Triumph’ and
‘Open Class’ went to Phillip Barratt with his splendid
Vanguard Vignale, Peter Liptrot with his Austin 10 1934 that
featured in the TV Series "All Creatures Great and
Small", Graham Hart and his familiar rebuilt Standard
Flying 10, and Paul Yates with his MG Midget.
Thanks to all those hard working members and exhibitors who made
this a great success.
