FRIENDS
OF LLANGOLLEN MOTOR MUSEUM
FIVE-DAY
WELSH RALLY 2009

The Standard participants in the
Welsh Mountains
The Welsh Rally, now in its 29th year
was originally started by a Club Member, the late Ted Broadhurst and
was usually based at Llangollen. Over the years, a fair number of Club
members and their Standards have supported the event. For the last
three years the event has been based on The Metropole Hotel,
Llandrindod Wells.

| Unfortunately, the
numbers of Members attending this year was down on previous
years. The Club was represented by yours truly with his 1935
Standard Ten, David and Judith Over with their 1956 Standard
Ten and Charles Brotherton who had left his 1931 Standard Avon
at home and brought a Wolseley Hornet Special.
We assembled at the Metropole
from the Monday lunchtime, which gave us the opportunity to
catch up with old friends and make some new ones. On a
five-day touring event such as this, the social aspect and the
eating and drinking element are probably as much an important
part of the event as the cars! |

Tuesday morning saw the start of the
first days motoring, and a lovely scenic route had been chosen which
headed north to Llangurig, then West to Capel Bangor. We visited the
Llywernog Lead and Silver Mine Museum, where we had a tour underground
then coffee. Then on to Capel Bangor where we visited a hydroelectric
generating facility, a fish farm, and a butterfly farm where we also
had lunch.

David and
Judith Over, well supplied with welsh food! |
Wednesday’s run took us
South East to the internationally renowned bookshop town of
Hay-on-Wye. Charles Brotherton decided to leave his Wolseley
in the hotel car park today, and navigated for me in the 1935
Ten. Several pleasant hours were spent in Hay-on-Wye,
searching in the bookshops and spending large amounts of
money! In the evening we headed to Brecon and had a cruise on
the Brecon and Monmouthshire Canal, with a buffet served on
board. We didn’t return to Brecon until 7.45 pm, so we had a
25 mile drive back to our hotel, whilst it was getting dark.
|
| Thursday run took
us through the magnificent scenery of the Cambrian Mountains,
and we saw picturesque dams, isolated farms and an abandoned
ruined village, passing Elan and Cwmystwyth before arriving at
Devils Bridge. Most people opted for coffee before boarding
the Vale of Rheidol Railway into Aberystwyth. Unfortunately I
had to leave the group at that point and return home. I needed
to change over cars to my 1913 Rhyl and head to Winchester to
take part in a Veteran Car Club Rally. If I had been able to
stay for the whole event, Friday’s motoring would have seen
a route via Knighton and Presteigne. |

So another excellent
event came to a close, I hope a few more of you will make the effort
to attend next year and thus keep up the Standard numbers.
