VISIT TO THE CORNWALL AT WAR MUSEUM, NEAR CAMELFORD II - THE SEQUEL
The Devon and Cornwall Group are one of the most active in your Club. Here they are out enjoying good company in the Spring sunshine and visiting yet another interesting attraction. If you own a Standard, on the road or not, in Devon or Corwall, the group would be delighted to hear from you and to meet you at one of their events. Click here for contact details. CORNWALL AT WAR MUSEUM VISIT- SUNDAY 18 APRIL 2010 - THE SEQUEL!! This is the second report on this event, this time by Linda Bowden: Planning a meet for our joint sections has become a regular feature of our calendar of events. This year Brian Murrish came up with a venue somewhere of equal distance between the two groups. So the Devon section could enjoy a run into Cornwall together we hatched a plan to meet for a cooked breakfast just off the moors in Devon. What a good excuse for a lovely cooked breakfast to set us up for the day! We arranged to all meet at Okehampton Railway station and this proved a great success with ten of us sitting down to a hearty breakfast. Most had their Standards so we lined up for a picture outside the historical station. Then we set off in convoy down into Cornwall, planning as far as possible to stick to the backroads and avoid the A30. There was no formal route but we had a lovely trip into Cornwall and arrived together at the Museum to join the Cornish contingent already in place. Brian in his newly acquired drophead and Pete Hallam and grandsons in his lovely Standard 16. Tony Smith was also there with his nice 1950’s Standard Eight. Following a quick cup of tea we enjoyed an interesting talk and video by one of the main volunteers, responsible for preserving the site. The whole group then left for an escorted tour of the former airfield, since given back to the village as common land. This tour took about an hour but we all drove our cars, some drivers swopping along the route to try out each others cars and all of us learnt quite a bit about the war effort in Cornwall. After enjoying a shared picnic we all set off in different directions home, Colin Fry to Dartmoor, Steve and Karen heading over the moor to Plymouth and John Garrard to North Devon. Lynda and David Swallow decided to make the most of the weather and set off to the beach. Ray and Julie Horne joined us on the trip home through Exeter to Mid Devon. Ray in his newly recommissioned Flying 10 out on its first long trip after going back on the road after many years laid up. Both flying standards “flew” home, stopping for fuel after over a 100 faultless miles, with only twenty miles to go, a minor fuel problem for Ray, was soon resolved and both cars returned home having enjoyed an excellent day out. Thanks to Brian and Dorothy for organising this event. Looking forward to meeting up at Killerton, Powderham and watch this space for our autumn run. Chris and Linda Bowden April 2010 |
