THE DEVON and CORNWALL GROUP

of the  STANDARD MOTOR CLUB
VISIT TO:

NEAR CAMELFORD

SUNDAY 18 APRIL 2010

The Devon and Cornwall Group are organising a road run on Sunday 18 April culminating in a visit to the above museum on Davidstow Airfield.

The run is starting with coffee at Okehampton railway station café at 10 a.m. ready for leaving at 10.30 a.m.. The route will be on mainly minor roads with only a short length of dual carriageway involved. The convoy, led by Chris Bowden will arrive at the museum at 12 noon and those who want to travel direct to Davidstow are free to do so. Ideally we would like to see you in your Standard but if yours is off the road, please come along and meet us in your modern; you may have to park it in the normal car park but you can still enjoy one of Cornwall’s newest attractions and join fellow Standard Motor Club members for a grand day out.

Entry fees to the museum will be £2 per person which is half the normal admission price. We are asking you to bring a picnic lunch as the site is miles away from a suitable hostelry and even if the weather is inclement, we can enjoy our picnic indoors using their facilities. Teas and coffees are available on the site, however.

There is a possibility that we may also have a guided tour of the area outside the museum complex which would include the old control tower and the runways, which in the main are still as they were left in 1945.

The museum is dedicated to the history of RAF Davidstow Moor from its opening in 1942 until its closure at the end of 1945. It also includes other airfields along the North Cornwall coast, the Royal Navy around the county , the Army, Civilian Services and the Home Front.

This is the highest surviving airfield in Britain and was used in the 1950’s for three years for British Formula One racing.

If you are joining the run from Okehampton or meeting us there, I will need to know numbers of those that wish to go to ensure a nice allotted parking area for our Standard display.

Please phone me any evening on 01872-560477 or email me at brian.murrish@standardmotorclub.org.uk

St Georges Day Classic Run

‘Four Counties’

Friday 23rd April 2010

organised by the Fairford Classic Car Club

The Club welcomes you all to the eighth St Georges day run. The format will be much as in previous years, a social atmosphere, no competition, interesting roads in a new area for us. Included in this year are coffee at the start, a midday two course lunch and a cream tea to wind up the day at the finish. Every year we move the action around the Fairford area, and this year we are heading north west and then east on a slightly longer route.

Given that we have reasonable weather the views on this route are just magnificent.

The event is open to members of The Fairford Classic Car Club, Cirencester Car Club, Austin Healey SW, The Historic and Classic Motor Club, The Standard Motor Club and guests driving vintage, classic/post classic cars, modern sports (at the organizers discretion) and motorcycles. The entry fee, which includes coffee/tea with biscuits for two at the start, a rally plate, mid rally lunch for two, cream tea for two at the finish, and all documentation, is £65. Your cheque should be made out to ‘Fairford Classic Car Club’

Our suggested route is just over 100 miles starting at ‘Denfurlong Farm’ near Chedworth just off the A429 at Fossebridge on the A429` north of Cirencester. The first car away is at 10.00am others at 30 second intervals. Please try to arrive at the start by 9.30am to sign on. The route will take us northward and then west along the Cotswold escarpment. It then visits Worcestershire before looping down into Warwickshire and Oxfordshire to pass through the chocolate box villages. The finish is where we started. .

The route directions will be as usual by ‘descriptive tulips’. Drivers will appreciate that this year the route is longer than previous years and but we will avoid the use of motorways altogether and use main roads for only short distances.

This is a touring assembly, with a ‘suggested route’only under the rules of road events. It does not include any element of competition.

Bunny Lees-Smith

If you would like to enter this rally, please contact Len Barr on leonardpbarr@aol.com for an entry form

West Midlands Summer Rally

    4 - 6 June 2010

    Shugborough Hall, Staffs

Shugborough is one of the few fully working estates left in England. The stunning family mansion house is filled with unique treasures and has 900 acres of breath-taking parkland and riverside gardens. See the costumed servants at work in the original working kitchens, laundry, dairy and mill and watch as flour, cheese, beer and culinary delights are produced before your eyes.

You could be one of the early birds, on Friday 4 June, meeting for an evening meal at the Barley Mow (1 mile from the Hall) and then dispersing to local accommodation or the campsite. Then join us at Shugborough, on Saturday 5 June, for a road run to Froghall Station followed by a steam locomotive trip on the Churnet Valley Railway, returning for dinner at Shugborough’s Ladywalk Restaurant.

Sunday 6 June sees us assemble in front of the Hall for the usual array of fine cars and light-hearted judging! This day is also the time to enjoy all the delights that Shugborough has to offer.

Details are available from John Lawley on 01564 742095 or email me john.lawley@standardmotorclub.org.uk for a booking form and further details on the hotels, campsite and costs.

Churchill Vintage and Classic Car Show

Sunday June 13th

We are holding the eleventh bi-annual Vintage and Classic Car Show at Churchill on the above date.

Arrangements have been made, as before, to site the show on the village green and we would be extremely pleased if you could display your vehicle[s]. Please let me know of anyone else who may be interested.

The date and timing are as follows;  Sunday June 13th. - 12.00pm to 5.00pm

                                              Exhibitors to arrive from 11.00am

To avoid congestion, entrance arrangements have been improved.  We ask that you sign at the bottom of this form to confirm insurance cover. Catering arrangements have been extended to commence from 10.00 am with refreshments being prepared by the W.I. and volunteers.

Unfortunately due to increased costs such as postage & insurance, we have had to raise the entrance fee to

£6 per vehicle which entitles you to a number of complimentary items, namely a rally plate, programme & commemorative plaque.  If you are interested please confirm with the details of the vehicle[s] you intend to display on the entry form below.

From 12.00, when the show opens to the public, there will be attractions including side shows, autojumble, motorcycles and stationary engines.   All proceeds from this event go to charity. In total we have raised more than £100,000 and our last show raised over £16,500.

Due to the popularity of the show we are limiting entries to 400 in total. This will ensure that we maintain the intimacy and friendliness that has been so much a part of our previous events

We look forward to seeing you.

D. Chambers [Chairman of the organising committee]

The Gloucestershire Steam & Vintage Extravaganza is an event that will enthrall and entertain the entire family from the moment you step inside the gates. So vast is the site and enjoyable the varied exhibits that many people return to the event for a second day as to see everything in one visit is pretty near impossible to achieve.

People both young and old are left in awe of the sights and sounds that can be found in, around and even above the showground. For your time with us you will be rewarded by not only a huge Steam & Vintage Rally, but also many elements found at a Country Show and of course the excitement of Aircraft coming and going all thrown in making the event value for money and one of the most unforgettable days out of the summer.

SEVERN VALLEY HOLIDAY

12 AUGUST - 17 AUGUST 2010

(organised by the Devon and Cornwall Group)

This will be the first holiday the Group have organised since its inception nearly ten years ago. This will be ideal for those who need to take a holiday in peak season BUT although it is in peak season it is costing off-peak prices.

The holiday is from mid-week to mid-week to reduce the traffic we have to contend with on the longer driving legs.

We are now asking any other SMC members if they would like to join us. You must be quick as there are few places left. It has to be finalised so quickly that it will not have time to go in the SMC Review unfortunately.

We hope that all of you will be in your Standard vehicles with no tailoring to the event. Most of us will be leaving Exeter Services at 9a.m. on Thursday 12 August and will be travelling on "A" and "B" roads, well away from motorways, up to our accommodation in the Severn Valley.

Many of us want to go to the Ironbridge area to see the many industrial heritage museums, Ironbridge itself, Blists Hill etc. On Friday and Saturday, just pick those museums you want to go to or just explore the Severn Valley itself with the shopping centres at Bridgnorth and Kidderminster all within easy reach.

On Sunday we hope to visit the Black Country Museum at Dudley – a museum not to be missed – We may be able to park in the picturesque streets with our vehicles, we could possibly invite local SMC members to join us if it could be arranged.

On Monday we hope to visit the Severn Valley Railway at Bewdley, being one of the easier places to park at the lines stations. Bewdley shopping area is not far away either.

On Tuesday 17 August a leisurely drive home.

Our accommodation has a large car park, a restaurant offering an excellent variety of food, all freshly prepared by their fully trained chefs, a bar with REAL ALES and fine wines.

I would imagine everyone would eat there for the first night and possibly the last night but there is nothing to stop you driving into neighbouring towns where more pubs and restaurants abound, on other nights.

Twin and double rooms are available at £55 per room per night BUT a deposit of £100 is needed NOW to secure your room.

Participants must book direct and you must mention the Standard Motor Club when booking to get our discounted rate.

Phone Brian Murrish NOW on 01872-560477 (evenings please) or email me at hawksworth147@talktalk.net for full information and the location of our venue.

You must mention the Standard Motor Club as these rooms are being held for us only for a limited time.

Once you have booked please phone me with your name and car details and if you are joining at Exeter Services or making your own way to Chelmarsh. I will need your daytime and mobile phone number plus an email address if you have one, for those last minute travel instructions.

If this jaunt proves successful, an annual holiday, organised by the Devon and Cornwall Group could be a regular fixture on our calendar.

YOU NEED TO BOOK NOW OR LOSE OUT

For further details phone Brian Murrish, evenings preferably on 01872-560477 or email me on hawksworth147@talktalk.net
