Brass Monkey Report

Out and about on a Chilly New Year's day!

Steve King's Flying 9

We are a hardy bunch in the Standard Motor Club. Despite the weather being such that Brass Monkeys were tucked up in bed, some of us were out in our Standards at various social events:

1. First, here is a  report by Steve King:

Phil,

I attach a couple of photos taken at an event yesterday. This is an informal gathering which takes place each year and yesterday despite it being a dull day and quite cold I would estimate over 200 vehicles attended. There were all types including motorbikes.

I took my Flying 9 and Tina was there with her Pennant. There was also a Dolomite. My car still shows the 2008 bumper sticker and Tina's has a birthday card for 50 years as it was first registered 1/1/59

Regards,

Steve

2. Report from the CVPS New Day's Meet, by Phil Homer.

Lynda and I decided the Flying 12 could do with a mid-winter run, so we opted to join a pub meet organised by the Chiltern Vehicle Preservation Society. It was a 20 mile run to a canal-side pub on the Grand Union near Leighton Buzzard. As you re probably aware, this car doesn't work properly if the hood is up, so it was hood down all the way there, and back.

We were so cold when we arrived at the "Grove Lock" that we retreated inside for a warm and a fantastic lunch without bothering to get the camera out. Here is a library picture taken on a warmer day (well, if you can call last summer "warm"!):

3. MVPS New Year's Day Event, by Graham Lockley

Hi Phil and Lynda,

Happy New Year!

Not to be outdone, your Chairman has asked me to send you some pictures of the local Midland Vehicle Preservation Society, New Years Day Run, to prove that he does use his Standards!

He and I were accompanied by fellow Standard owners, Malc & Heather Graham in the Vanguard.

The run took us from Tesco's car park on the eastern side of Coventry out towards Rugby, via the villages of Brandon, Bretford, Church Lawford, Kings Newnham, Harborough Magna, Easenhall, Monks Kirby and Stretton-under Fosse to the Bulls Head at Brinklow.

We seemed to manage to lose most of the other 20 odd participants on the way, even though we kept to the route, so the wintry picture taken near Monks Kirby, shows only two ancient Land Rovers accompanying us.

Back at the pub the only other vehicle with a tenuous Standard connection was the 1930s Dolomite, with the waterfall radiator.

Inside, a roaring fire awaited, plus traditional fish, chips and mushy peas, washed down with Thwaites "Good Elf", a strong sweet dark ale of 4.9% or Black Sheep Bittter.

Graham Lockley

Good plan Graham, getting the Chairman to drive, whilst the rest of you sup the real ale!

Phil

Room for more....If you participated in a New Year's day event, please give me a short report and a photo if you can.

These pages take many hours to produce, tell me if you are enjoying them.
