National Exhibition Centre Show 2001 Report
National Exhibition Centre Show, Nov 2001
(above) A general view of the Club Stand, with organiser Brian Birch. On the left is Peter Lockley's Swallow Doretti, in the centre the Phae II Vanguard chassis of Steve Naylor, with itss diesel engine prominent; on the right is Steve Naylor's 1956 Triumph Ten with Standrive and overdrive
The theme of this years show was "Innovation and Derivation" and the Club's stand illustrated both themes well due to the variety of vehicles and components on Show. As the Vanguard was the worlds first production diesel saloon this was truly innovative, as was the "Standrive" semi automatic gearbox system, the components of which were assembled on the stand. To represent the "derivation" theme, the club also showed a Swallow Doretti, based on Vanguard components. As another example of derivation, it was aslo intended to show a 1931 Avon of Peter Lee, but this car unfortunately suffered a mechanical failure on the way to the NEC, so was not able to be present. In consolation there is a feature on Peters car if you press this link (press back to come back here)
This was by far the largest yet of these annual shows and covered 3 massive halls. The attendance was huge on both days, with much interest from the public shown on the Club stand. Again, a massive effort by Brian Birch to bring such a fine display together. The Club greatly appreciates your help and support, Brian. Many thanks.
Trevor Walker's recently restored 1957 Ten was displayed on the Millers Oils stand
Peter Lockley's Swallow Doretti made its debut on the club stand at the NEC after a 3 year restoration. I hope to feature a restoration article on this car shortly, so please keep a look out for it

On the Tickford stand at the NEC was a fine 1936 Standard 12 with bodywork that may or may not be Tickford.
