Standard 8 in Uttar Pradesh

Standard 8 to be restored in India

Here's the latest Standard find from Karl Bhote in India

Hi Phil,

I've just been sent photos of this supposed Standard Flying 9, recently sold for 55,000 rupees to be restored in Uttar Pradesh. I'm pretty sure the front grille isn't original, but friends are telling me otherwise. Can you confirm?

Cheers,

Karl

Hi Karl,

The grille surround is correct but the mesh insert is not. Its an 8 because of the shape of the bumper, whereas the 9 had flat blade bumpers. Also there are no bonnet side louvres, so that makes it a 1945-47 model. There are a couple of extra pipes under the bonnet, I suspect that these run to an aftermarket heater.

55,000 rupees sounds like a lot of money to pay for a car in such poor condition, so I wish the new owners well with their restoration. The Club has lots of spares for this model.

As inspiration, here is what the car should look like. Please send this to the new owner http://www.standardmotorclub.org.uk/cars/flying/features/eightsaloon.htm

We are always pleased to hear of Standards in India, so please keep sending  them on.

Cheers,

Phil
