Standard Selby sighted

4th Running Standard Selby in India

The Selby in use in India

The Indian sub-continent continues to be a goldmine for Standard Cars This is the most recent precious discovery!

I have previously featured 3 Selbys in use in the UK. It is very pleasing therefore to be able to report on a 4th Selby on the road in India. This appears to be a 1929/30 model in very good order. I am indebted to Karl Bhote  who sent me details of this car from an Indian Forum website.

The Selby is a coachbuilt Tourer body by Avon of Warwick on the Standard Big 9 chassis. How this one came to be so far from home is something that remains to be explained. I am sure Karl will keep us informed if he finds anymore information about this rare car.

If any more information becomes available I will update this page

Hi Phil

I can confirm that it is a 1929 Selby, the same as the "2nd example" that Dennis Brown found and pictured next to his own car.    Note both of these have a split windscreen - the top portion opens. Later 1930 examples, such as Dennis Brown's have a one piece windscreen.

This particular car was known to the Standard Register - we were notified of its existence in April 1968, when it was owned by: (name witheld)  The owner claimed in his letter that he was only the second owner.

A further letter followed in August 1969 saying that the car was for sale.   Where the car has been in the last 40 years and how many owners in this period, is unfortunately not known , but further information is welcomed

With best wishes

Regards

Len Barr

Thanks for that additional information, Len

I have included a Video of "The Statesman Rally 2008" here, where the Selby is used in the opening shots. The Video is interesting in that it also shows the great enthusiasm for our type of cars in India.
