Report on the Isle of Wight Charity Classic Event

 September 15th to 18th 2017

Isle of Wight Charity Classic Car Event took place over the weekend of 15 to 18 September 2017. It’s an ideal place to go for those who like to use their cars as well as show them to members of the public. As well as our Flying 12DHC other Club members attending included Mike and June Lewis with a Ten, Steve Smeltzer in a Companion, Mick Harvey in his 4/8A Tourer, Peter and Janet Darby with their 14, Nick Proudlock with his Pennant and  Len Barr and Bob James who were driving a very original Falmouth saloon.

We took the short crossing to the IOW from Lymington to Yarmouth on Friday 15th September. The event takes place on the Quay at Newport on the Saturday. A really splendid line up of all sorts of classic vehicles was to be seen, with a great crowd of interested onlookers and enthusiasts engaging us in animated conversations about memories of cars they had or still do own, technical issues and interesting facts. A good day was had by all as we relaxed in the September sunshine.

The Sunday event is on the Esplanade at Ryde. The rally has a purpose, it raises money from donations and collections for local charities every year, as well as being a great attraction for locals and visitors strolling along the sea front.

Thanks to Steve Smeltzer for organising everything for us including booking the hotel, and to our fellow Standard club members for their good company over the weekend. Join us next year?

The sunflowers and charity collection box in front of Peter’s car represent the fact that he has supported the IOW Charity Classic Car Show for 10 years, raising money for the local hospice.
