David Lovering     1921 – 2017

I am sorry to report the passing of David Lovering, at the grand old age of 96.

A long standing club member and owner of a 1946 Standard 4/8A. In early years David was active in car rallies and events all over the South West.

He was a keen steam and fair organ fan and for many years ran the car section at The Great Dorset Steam Fair, where he shared the commenting box with Kim Henson (Club member and classic car journalist),

David would often be seen at shows with his ‘Dad’ (as he fondly called him) Edie Holly, who ran a 1939 Standard Eight Drophead Coupe.  David always called him his dad even though Edie was a few years older than him!

I first met David, a true gentleman at Honiton Hill Rally in Devon, in the late 1970’s after I acquired my 1947 4/8A which was derelict and part dismantled.  I saw David’s 4/8A which was absolutely pristine, which inspired me to restore mine.

We became firm friends and over the years exchanged parts and information on each other’s cars.

David would travel down to Powderham Rally near Exeter and would always arrive with his customary big smile on his face and would be jovial and jolly all weekend.

A very helpful man, my own ’mentor’ during my own restoration and a true gentleman.  He will be missed by many who enjoyed his company.
