Standard 8 4 door Saloon Archive Page

The 4 door Standard Eight Page

The only picture of a 4 door Eight?

Late in 1939, Standard announced a new model for the1940 season, a four door variant of their extremely popular Flying 8 saloon, previously only produced in 2 door form. The brochure featured here is not dated but must be just before the outbreak of war on 3rd September 1939.

The brochure is interesting and so far as I know contains the only picture (drawing) of the car. I have never seen an example of this model, does one exist or was one ever made?

The cover of the brochure

Advertising Standards in 1939 were perhaps not as strict as they are today. Just imagine the furore there would be if a child-like model were superimposed about 2/3rds size in the back of a car to create an impression of limousine type space, as so clearly has been done here!

Update of March 2005: My thanks go to Bo Legelius from Sweden, who has sent me this road test article from the "Motor" of 7th February 1940. (the article is a .pdf document)

Do you know of a surviving 4 door Eight? Please tell us about it on the Club Messageboard

I am aware that there are other cars and information that could be added to this site to make it more comprehensive, so if you have material and photographs, please let me know.  Please send me, Phil Homer, a message at: Phil Homer
